South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) has won a $370 million order from Greek ship owner Alpha Gas S.A. to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, the company said on Thursday.

DSME said it will build the tankers at its shipyard in Okpo in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, and aims to deliver them by the end of 2020.

According to the company, the two 173,400 cubic meter LNG carriers will be loaded with M-type, electronically controlled gas injection (MEGI) engines and a full re-liquefaction system, which help to enhance overall energy efficiency by about 30 percent compared to existing LNG carriers and reduce emissions by more than 30 percent.

Sources noted that Alpha Gas made the order to boost its LNG fleet business on positive outlook on the LNG market.

According to British shipbuilding and marine industry tracker Clarkson Research Services, DSME has the world’s largest backlog of LNG vessel orders, accounting for 35 percent of total 115 vessels. The company said that eight of the 14 shipbuilding orders it has won this year are LNG vessels, raising hopes for improved profitability.

An unnamed official from DSME said there are positive signs for industry recovery this year such as improved market conditions and a rise in shipping charges. The company expects to win additional orders given that ship owners that most sensitively respond to the market seem to have a positive industry outlook, the official added.

So far this year, DSME has won 14 orders worth $1.92 billion including eight LNG vessels, five very large crude carriers (VLCC), and one special ship, already reaching its target of 2 trillion won ($1.88 billion) for this year.
