SK Energy Co., oil refining unit of South Korean conglomerate SK Group, will add courier service to its gas stations, turning its retail outlet into a place where customers can do more than gas filling.

SK Energy said Tuesday that it has inked an agreement with the country’s largest logistics service firm CJ Logistics Corp. to cooperate on parcel delivery service. Under the deal, SK’s gas stations will function as a parcel collection hub where intermediary courier service firms drop off parcels collected from customers and CJ Logistics gathers the parcels ready for distribution.

The company expects the new courier service will benefit both CJ Logistics and itself - the courier service firm will save delivery time and the gas station will be upgraded to a station providing multi-services to customers. With this new courier service, parcel customers will see the overall delivery time cut short and they will be able to send bigger and heavier parcels compared to convenience store’s courier service.

In line with the addition of courier service, SK Energy will work to upgrade its gas stations to serve as an integrated auto service center. It plans to offer big data-based customized car management solutions and set up charging stations for electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered cars as well as introduce a smart payment system for self-driving cars.
