South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Co. will unveil its first electric vehicle concept model for its Genesis luxury sedan at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday.
The concept car would be a prelude to the commercial vehicles due for roll-out in 2021, according to industry sources on Sunday.
The new Genesis EV would take the form of a gran turismo (GT), a performance and luxury automobile capable of high speed and long-distance driving.
The mass-produced EVs to be launched in 2021 would be able to travel 500 kilometers on a single charge, a driving range similar to that of conventional petrol and diesel cars, said the company.
Hyundai Motor said it is also developing EV platforms that would speed up the production of cars with different battery capacity.
The automaker plans to release at least four new eco-friendly models under the Genesis brand by 2025, including a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.
