Hyundai Rotem Co., railway systems building unit of South Korean conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group, on Thursday unveiled a light-rail train that will be ready in time for the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta this August.
The train is the first delivery of a $33 million order to build eight light-rail trains with two units each that the company won from Indonesia’s state-run asset manager PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) February last year. The light-rail train will first be used during the 2018 Asian Games running from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in Indonesia’s capital city. The company aims to deliver the last train by October this year after test runs.
Indonesia has been constructing a light-rail system in Jakarta ahead of the pan-Asia, multi-sport event. Hyundai Rotem’s trains will be running the city’s first light-rail transit route, connecting the 5.8-kilometer section between athlete’s village and sports complex to carry athletes and visitors from nearly 45 countries across Asia as well as local city-dwellers.
Hyundai Rotem’s light-rail train is made of aluminum making its trains lighter in weight and more fuel-efficient than conventional steel-based trains, said the company.
The company has been rapidly expanding its light-rail system business since it built its first units in 2006.
