BMW’s new X3 sport

Amidst liquidity crisis and uncertainties over its fate, South Korea’s Kumho Tire Co. won a deal to supply original equipment (OE) tires to German Luxury automaker BMW.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will provide its Crugen HP91 tires manufactured at Gwangju plant in South Jeolla Province for BMW’s new X3 sport utility vehicles that have been produced in the Unites States since June 2017.

The premium Crugen HP91 is made of multi-functional rubber to enhance ride comfort and abrasion resistance. It has four circumferential grooves to improve skid resistance on wet roads. “We will work hard to develop customized tires that can meet the needs of individual customers amid rising demand for SUV,” said an official from the company.

The country’s second largest tire maker could head to the bankruptcy court as early as next week if the union continues to resist creditors’ plan to cut wages and sell the company to Chinese Doublestar Tyre. Employers maintain they are better off under court management than a Chinese entity, which used to be smaller than the Korean maker, despite warning from creditors that they will stop debt moratorium if the union does not concede by Friday. Creditors led by main stakeholder Korea Development Bank have been rolling over overdue obligation worth 1.3 trillion won.
