Nvidia Corp. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said on Tuesday that he expects to see the emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI) within five years but with the caveat that it depends on how the term is defined.

“If we define the ability of artificial intelligence (AI) to perform better than humans in tests such as mathematics, reading, or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) as AGI, it could possible emerge within five years, but if we define it as encompassing the entirety of human intelligence, it is extremely hard to answer,” Jensen Huang said when asked by reporters when AGI could be expected at the company’s GPU technology conference (GTC) 2024 held in San Jose, California, on Tuesday (local time). “If you ask the question about simply general intelligence, rather than defining the ability to pass tests, the answer is murkier.”

Huang also emphasized that it is possible to resolve the persistent problem of hallucination, defined as when AI occasionally provides inaccurate answers to human questions.

”By using a method known as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI first searches for answers to questions, prioritizes them, and then responds accordingly,“ he said. ”We can thus also avoid hallucinations.“
