Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang recently complimented Samsung Electronics Co. and other Korean chipmakers on their quality of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips and hinted at Nvidia’s possible purchase of the chips produced by Samsung Electronics.

“HBM is a technological miracle,” Huang said during a media event at the Nvidia GPU Technology Conference held in San Jose, California.

“HBM memory is very complicated, and its value added is very high,” Huang said, adding that Nvidia is looking to buy Samsung Electronics‘ HBM chips.

Huang was optimistic about the potential of generative artificial intelligence to drive demand for HBM chips, suggesting that it could replace double data rate (DDR) memory in data centers across the world. He lauded Samsung Electronics and SK hynix Inc for their role in the current technological advancement while emphasizing HBM’s sustainability and energy efficiency.

When asked about Nvidia’s chance of partnering with Samsung Electronics, however, Huang hinted at potential future partnerships without providing specific details. But he added that that the company is currently testing Samsung‘s HBM3E for integration into its graphics processing units (GPUs) and highlighted their collaboration with SK hynix Inc. and Samsung Electronics in the high-bandwidth memory sector.

Nvidia’s focus is currently on building data centers rather than chip manufacturing, according to Huang, which suggests a growing need for data centers to deal with generative AI platforms.
