Korea’s three major electric vehicle battery makers – LG Energy Solution, SK on and Samsung SDI – sustained solid expansion in the global EV map in the first quarter, with latecomer SK making bigger leaps through aggressive ramp-up, according to data from market tracker SNE Research on Monday.

SK on took a market share of 6.3 percent in the global market for the January-Mar. period, more than doubled from 2.6 percent a year earlier.

LG Energy Solution increased its share by 39.1 percent to 15.1 percent and Samsung SDI by 26.2 percent to 3.6 percent in the same period.

There was no change in global rankings as market leader CATL from China maintained its top spot, followed by LG Energy Solution, BYD, Panasonic, SK on, CALB, and Samsung SDI.

SNE Research said the strong growth of Korean battery makers was driven by more sales of EVs globally.

LG Energy Solution’s battery pack is installed in Tesla Model Y in China, Volkswagen ID.4, and Audi Q4 e-tron, among others. SK on has supplied its battery pack to Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia Niro EV and EV6, whose sales are on the rise. Samsung SDI batteries are increasingly installed in BMW iX and Fiat 500 models.

Like Korean companies, Chinese battery makers continued their strong growth in the first quarter. CATL recorded a 33.3 percent market share, up by 137.7 percent from a year ago. BYD jumped by 220.4 percent with a 10.5 percent share, and CALB posted a 208.7 percent rise to 4.2 percent.
