Yogiyo, Korea’s second largest food app, is replacing its chief reportedly with e-commerce specialist as it gets ready to add grocery delivery service in partnership with retail major GS Retail.

Kang Shin-bong, Yogiyo’s chief executive officer on Monday sent out an e-mail to employees to inform them of his resignation. He served as Yogiyo’s CEO since 2017. Yogiyo already has picked the new CEO, who reportedly will start on Tuesday, according to industry sources.

The leadership change comes as Yogiyo gears up for its collaboration with GS Retail on grocery delivery service.

GS Retail is building food retail business vertical under its corporate vision unveiled early this year to grow beyond convenience store chain and traditional grocery store business by designing private label products for production and sale. The company plans to launch 30-minute grocery shopping service by June and offer the service nationwide by the end of this year, GS Retail CEO Huh Yeon-soo said at the general shareholders meeting in late March.

Yogiyo reportedly will work with GS Retail on delivery of goods from its micro-fulfillment centers to the retailer’s sales outlets, GS25 convenience stores and GS The Fresh grocery stores located throughout the country.

The food delivery app operator introduced Yogiyo Pass, which offers discounts on food delivery on fixed monthly membership payment, in November. Its subscription-based food delivery service, the first of its kind in Korea, accumulated 900,000 paid users in five months.
