South Korean conglomerate SK Group’s silicon wafer-making unit SK Siltron Co. is expected to invest $300 million to expand silicon carbide (SiC) wafer production plant at its U.S. plant in Michigan to meet the burgeoning demand for the key material in making electric vehicles and 5G network.

The company is said to be working to soon announce a plan to inject $300 million to ramp up SiC wafer output at a plant in Michigan, the United States to six times larger than the current capacity, according to industry sources on Wednesday.

SK Siltron acquired the SiC wafer business from U.S. DuPont for $450 million in February last year.

SiC wafers are essential in manufacturing of power semiconductors used in electric vehicles and 5G network equipment.

SiC semiconductors can endure 10 times higher voltage than existing semiconductors and operate in 400 degrees Celsius temperature, unlike existing silicon semiconductors with a ceiling of 175 degrees. They also have high intensity level and can reduce volume to one-tenth of silicon chips.
