Korea Southern Power Co. has launched construction of a power plant in the United States, becoming the first Korean public utility to be involved in such a project in the country.
Korea Southern Power said on Thursday it held a groundbreaking ceremony to build a 1,085MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) in Niles Cass County, Michigan on Wednesday. The total cost of the project is $1.05 billion and the plant is scheduled to be completed in March 2022 and run for 35 years. Expected sales are $500 million per year.
The state-run district power supplier said its entry into the highly potential U.S. energy market is significant as it is connected with job creation and exports of Korean-made power equipment such as transformers and boilers.
Nebraska-headquartered contractor Kiewit is responsible for engineering, procurement and construction
Electricity generated from the power plant will be distributed to grid operator PJM Interconnection, which runs the largest U.S. electricity market affecting one-fifth of the population. Korea Southern Power contributed 50 percent of a budget of $470 million, while South Korean energy firm Daelim Energy and U.S.-based Indeck chipped in 30 percent and 20 percent, respectively.
The three firms also agreed to set up an entity to participate in the operation and management of the power plant.
