Korean companies’ biz sentiment remains at 10-year lows in Sept

South Korea’s business sentiment stayed the worst since the 2008-2009 financial crisis in September as the Korean Inc. faced trade challenges on top of waning productivity.

According to the Korea Economic Research Institute (KERI) on Wednesday, the business survey index (BSI) for September of the country’s 600 largest companies by sales stood at 87.8. It rose from the lowest reading of 80.7 since global financial crisis a decade ago in the previous month but nevertheless stayed in the 80 zone. The index has been under 100 for the 16th straight month.

A BSI reading below 100 means more companies are pessimistic about the business outlook.

Prospects turned bad to worse as companies now have to worry about supply disruption following Japan’s export curbs on top of softening in global commerce due to re-escalated tensions between the U.S. and China.

Protracted lethargy in domestic consumptions also weighs over business prospects for Korean companies, KERI added.

The index measuring business performance in August moved down to 84 from 84.6 in July, hovering below 100 for 52nd consecutive months. The sub-indices all stayed below 100, with the figure for domestic consumption at 87.8, export 93.4, investment 94.1, financing 94.9, inventory 102.4 (negative when above 100), employment 94.9, and profitability 92.3, according to data.

All-around efforts are needed to help improve business conditions, ranging from tax benefits and deregulations to diplomatic efforts to address the row with Japan, KERI said.
