Samsung Electronics performed its best in six years in sales of smartphone in Japan in the second quarter thanks to warm response to its 10th year anniversary Galaxy premium phones, data showed Monday.

The Korean tech giant shipped around 600,000 smartphones in Japan in the April-June period, accounting for 9.8 percent of sales in Japanese market, according to the data compiled by Strategy Analytics.

Samsung ranked second behind its U.S. rival Apple whose market share stood at 50.8 percent. Both Apple and Samsung saw their market share rise from 45.6 percent and 8.8 percent, respectively, from a year ago. Samsung was followed by two Japanese brands, Sharp and Sony. Sharp’s smartphone share gained 2.1 points to 7.2 percent but Sony’s fell 3.3 points to 7.0 percent in the same period. China’s Huawei slid from fourth to fifth place with 3.3 percent in the second quarter, down from 5.9 percent a year ago.

Samsung`s market presence in Japan had declined to 3.4 percent in 2016 due to tough competition with Apple and Japanese brands, but it has steadily rebounded since 2017, taking up 5.2 percent in that year and 6.4 percent in 2018.
