A group from Georgia, the U.S., led by Governor Brian Kemp has been visiting Korea this week to thank SK Group for its $1.7 billion investment in the state and draw more investments from Korean companies.

SK Innovation said Thursday Kemp and the economic delegates of the state of Georgia toured its lithium ion battery manufacturing plant in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province. The Korean company currently is constructing its first U.S-located electric vehicle battery plant in the city of Commerce, Georgia, with a spending of $1.67 billion through 2022. It is the biggest single investment deal made by a foreign company in Georgia.

Kemp reportedly was keen on learning production technology of the Seosan EV battery plant, comparing it with what would be applied at SK Innovation’s new manufacturing base in Georgia.

Following the tour, Kemp and his team met with SK Innovation’s senior executives including SK Group Executive Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won and SK innovation CEO & President Kim Jun to discuss future cooperation on cultivating engineers and specialists in the EV battery field.

Earlier this week on Monday, Kemp visited automotive brake maker Sangshin Brake’s headquarters in Daegu, southeast of Korea. The Korean company has an operation in Georgia and in March pledged a new investment of $20 million in the state of Georgia, which would create 200 new jobs in the region.

The governor also visited Kia Motors’ global head office in Seoul on Wednesday. The Korean automaker runs a manufacturing plant in Georgia, producing its new mid-sized sports utility vehicle Telluride.
